Ascent to the Summit of Mont Banc in 1834 (Second Edition)
This second edition of Barry's work was based upon two lectures he gave regarding his ascent of Mont Blanc, expanding on the text of the first edition dramatically. Six guides accompanied Barry on the expedition in which he made what he argued to be the 16th ascent to the summit (it is contested that this was likely the overall 21st successful ascent). This edition also includes coloured versions of the two frontispieces, as well as a folding panorama of Mont Blanc at the rear.Â
Second Edition. Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Sons, and T. Cadell, 1836. Slim small 8vo. Later half green crushed Morocco and marbled boards. Pages: [viii: two frontispieces, title, preliminaries], ii, 119. Folding panorama at rear.
Later half green crushed Morocco and marbled paper boards. Raised bands to spine and lettering in gilt. Edges uncut. Binder's sticker for "Delrue Bookbinders" on FBEP. Two frontispiece illustrations have been hand-coloured. Near fine. Binding likely done at some point after publication, remains in remarkable condition. Some very minor rubbing at edges of paper boards. Leather remains in fine condition. Contents complete and in near fine condition. Some very minor spotting here and there. Map has no tearing at seams, joint has been reinforced with adhesive cloth.
Provenance:Â From the library of Warwick H. Williams.
