New Zealand: Its Physical Geography, Geology and Natural History (First Edition)
Originally published in 1863 in German as "Neu-Seeland", this is the first edition published in English. A foundational text in establishing our scientific understanding of New Zealand's geology which helped to establish its unique and important scientific reputation internationally. Hochstetter provides detailed descriptions of New Zealand's volcanic regions, particularly the thermal areas around Rotorua and the Taupo Volcanic Zone.
First Edition. Stuttgart: J.G. Cotter, 1867. 4to. Original green publisher's cloth. Pages: xvi, 515. Two folding maps at rear. 7 coloured engravings, 10 woodcut engravings, and numerous illustrations throughout.
Bound in original green publisher's pebbled cloth. Covers profusely decorated in patterned blind stamping. Lettering to spine in gilt. Illustrated vignette blocked in gilt on cover. Very good. Hardcover bindings sturdy, with a little soiling and darkening at upper spine creases. Covers a touch rubbed here and there. Gilt vignette to cover a touch dulled, however still presents as stunning. Mild foxing throughout contents, including on some of the plates. Otherwise, a very good copy, presents wonderfully.
