The novel follows Galaxy 'Alex' Stern, a dropout and the sole survivor of an unsolved multiple homicide, who is offered a full scholarship to Yale on the condition that she monitor the activities of its eight secret societies. When a girl is found murdered on campus, Alex finds herself the only person unwilling to accept the convenient official explanation. 

The critical reception was immediate and emphatic: Stephen King called it impossible to put down; Lev Grossman declared it one of the best fantasy novels he had read in years; Joe Hill said it rocked his world. It was an instant Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller, won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Fantasy of 2019, and was shortlisted for the Locus Award. A sequel, Hell Bent, followed in 2023. A television adaptation for Amazon Studios is in development. 

This Gollancz first edition, signed, represents the first UK appearance of one of the landmark fantasy novels of recent years.
