On the Admiration of Mountains (Limited Facsimile Edition)

A beautiful and faithful reproduction of the 1543 original produced by one of America’s finest presses to have existed. The Grabhorn Press, founded in 1919 in San Francisco by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn, has been compared to the great English private presses of the period for the quality of their productions.

This work is no exception: the text is hand-set in Italian Old Style type on luxurious Van Gelden paper; the title page is printed faithfully to the original and red-and-black; and it includes eight woodcut illustrations by Hand Leonhard Schaufelin. The binding is lavishly patterned in orange and brown with a cream cloth spine. Importantly, this edition retains an excellently preserved and very scarce original paper dust wrapper, as well as a glassine outer wrapper with spine titling in black. This edition was limited to 325 unnumbered copies.

Unnumbered limited edition of 325. San Francisco: The Grabhorn Press, 1937. 4to. 55pp. Bound in original publisher's quarter cream cloth and decorative hardcover. Retains dust jacket and titled glassine outer wrapper. Near fine. A beautifully preserved copy. Some chipping and tearing to edges of paper wrapper, though these are minimal. Else, fine. Contents beautiful, a few small spots at upper edge. Otherwise, fine, free from imperfection.

Full title: On the Admiration of Mountains, the prefatory letter addressed to Jacob Avienus, Physician, in Gesner’s pamphlet “On Milk and Substances Prepared from Milk,” first printed at Zurich in 1543. A Description of the Riven Mountain, commonly called Mount Pilatus, addressed to J. Chrysostome Huber, originally printed with another work of Gesner’s at Zurich in 1555. Translated by H. B. D. Soule.

Provenance: From the library of Warwick H. Williams.
